8A - Solving the Problem

My opportunity is the problem of people overusing social media.  In order to solve this, I could make an app that is connected to all social media platforms on one’s phone.  You can select settings in this app that prevent you from using a specific social media platform such as Twitter or Instagram for more than an allotted amount of time in a day.  For example, if you select the setting to only allow you to go on Facebook for 1.5 hours a day, after you have been on Facebook for 1.5 hours during a day, you will not be able to open up Facebook until the next day.  This can help prevent people from habitually opening up these platforms.

To combat the negative health effects of social media, the app will turn off all notifications from every platform.  This will prevent people from being reminded that they have received a “like” or that one of their friends has posted a new picture.  Taking away this notification will decrease the likelihood of people going on social media because they will not be constantly reminded about it.  I understand you can turn off these notifications through the settings in your phone, but I have attempted to do this and still receive notifications after turning them off. This app will ensure that no notifications will appear on your phone.  Also, you have to go into each app’s settings to edit the notification status for which ones you want to see/don’t want to see.  This app will skip all of that and turn off all notifications for every app in one step.

  1. Adam,
I can definitely relate to overusing social media and could see how your app could benefit other people as well who struggle with the same problem. I think your app ideas are similar to other apps that are currently out but could go a step further as you said by skipping steps and making the process less tedious. I myself have an iPhone and have accessed the "Screentime" feature but yet it doesn't do anything for me similar to how the notifications still come through on your phone.

  2. Hey Adam, I like the direction for your solution, but I think you may need to go a step further. Something like this already exists for iPhones in the settings called "screen time" which limits the amount of time you can spend on an app per day. I believe this is a really good solution, but I still think it could be better, which is where your app could come in. Finally I wanted to commend you on this solution because it's something that's very relevant and looking for ways to improve the health of your consumers is always a plus.

  3. Adam, I think this a great idea. Recently with the iPhone update, you now get a notification telling you how much time you spent on your phone this week and where you spent that time. Each week I think that there is no way I spent that much time on my phone. Sometimes I will look and see two hours on Netflix, that makes sense I was just watching a movie. But then I will see four hours on Instagram and Snapchat. If I had something, especially at night time when I am just distracted on my phone, to tell me it’s time to move on, it would be very useful.
