1. The marketing segment that best fits with my opportunity is the demographic segment. Most social media users are younger generations that have grown up with Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook being heavily influenced as a social norm. Consequently, most adults grew up without social media present and therefore either don’t use it at all or barely use it.
2-4. Interviews:
· I first interviewed my 22-year-old brother who is a senior at the University of Florida. He claims to use social media - Twitter especially - for several hours a day. After speaking with him about his habits, he finds himself constantly trying to refrain from using Twitter but often fails. When trying to overcome his problem, my brother turns off his notifications. This works for a little while but does not prevent him from opening his phone to see what is going on in the social media world.
· My next interviewee is my friend’s 11-year-old brother. He reports using social media all of the time, even in school where phones are not permitted. He says that whenever he receives notifications from Snapchat, Twitter, or Instagram, he immediately opens his phone to check these notifications. While he uses social media quite frequently, he doesn’t comprehend that it is bad for him or that he is wasting time. Because he is so young, he has grown up with social media always being a part of his life and never seen it negatively affect one of his peers.
· My final interviewee is a family friend of mine who recently graduated from college and is now living in New York City. She revealed that she sues social media daily, but mostly after work. She claims to be very busy at work and does not have the time to scroll through her Instagram feed until she gets home at night. Because she finds herself only going on social media at night, she is not overusing during the day. However, to make up for lost time, she continually finds herself up late at night in bed because she is stuck on social media. To combat this, she tries to make sure her phone is off by 10pm.
5. After speaking with these three people, I have confirmed that the unmet need for my app is present. The younger generations of people are inclined to the overuse of social media because it is so heavily promoted and readily available in the palm of one’s hand.
6. In terms of the demographic segment, the need is primarily found among people 2 years old to 30 years old. This is the age gap in which I have discovered the most people use social media daily. While young adults understand the severity of overusing social media, adolescents do not grasp the big picture.
Adam,
ReplyDeleteI agree that most of the people who would use your product are younger generations. I think it is good that you interviewed a wider range of young people instead of just college students. I also think it is interesting how you found that adolescents do not care as much about overusing social media. This is not something I had considered. Thanks for your thoughtful post!
Adam,
ReplyDeleteI can relate to overusing social media and find that this a problem extremely relevant for our generation and younger generations as well. Especially since technology is advancing more and more everyday and most things are conducted over the internet, social media use has skyrocketed more than ever. I liked the range of people you interviewed as well!
Adam,
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job at identifying the current range of ages that affected by this social media usage issue. It makes sense that the older generations don't use social medias as much since they didn't grow up with them like we did. I guess those habits form early but as the population continues to age, will we find ourselves being distracted by social media at night as well? Evidently, there is a better way to spend our time and I think you're on the path to helping many people make time for activities outside of the phone.
Adam,
ReplyDeleteI think you found a great section of the market for your product, your information that you received really seemed to give you good information that you can use to tailor to the market. You did a great job picking people that would fit this criteria. Since you also found that your opportunity could really be helpful to many, although it is not for every age group, this seems to be a great product for the market.
